  HYMENOPTERA
(Australian Wasps & Bees)

While spiders are the major non-insect population controllers of insects,
some insects control populations of
spiders. Wasps are major players in
this arena. Many sting-bearing wasps
also serve as models for many insect
and some spider mimics. Red/Black, Orange/Black, Yellow/Black, White/Black, combos, are commonly employed by
many Wasp species. Warning colours
of these insects normally alert young vertebrates (Amphibians, Birds,
Mammmals, Reptiles) that they STING!
– it hurts on first contact – maybe
I might remember next time??

Australia has around 2,000 native bees
most of which lead solitary lives. While
many are generalist pollinators of our
native flowering plants others have highly specific pollinating relationships with a particular type of plant.
