(Australian Moths)

Being the driest continent on earth has not favoured butterflies in this phase of Australia’s history simply because the external plant-feeding larva known as caterpillars, literally water-filled sausages, are quickly sucked of their body moisture by the relentless heat – only 416 species grace this dry land.

Moth caterpillars, however, have faired better by employing a number of water-saving strategies resulting in a species total that may exceed 15,000 species.
