Anyone having the pleasure (sometimes dubious) of experiencing the
green cathedrals of South-east Asia would have had, at times, small
persistant bees drinking sweat from the corners of their eyes, among
other places. They also may have blundered into a weaver ant trail,
or worse, a leaf nest and been bitten and dutifully sprayed with formic
acid. Worst of all they may have been climbing a tree and inadvertently
grasped a branch supporting a paper-nest wasp colony. These ‘worst
case’ Hymenopteran scenarios should never mask the normally
innocuous ant, wasp and bee experiences that can be sought in such
places. 25
