0265:
Mangrove Sea Snake eating Goby
Ephalophis greyae
WA
REPTILES
(Seasnakes - Elapidae, Hydrophiinae)
Seasnakes
live all their lives in salty water which means egg-laying is not
possible. Another strange feature of some species, including A. laevis
(Right), is the presence of light sensitive scales on the paddle-tail.
Presumably these indicate to the snake when its tail is exposed as
it shelters on shallow reefs. The presence of snake-eating Sea Eagles,
Brahminy Kites, and Ospreys, have probably forced such an adaptation.
